This experimental sculpture collection entitled Nostalgia was inspired by different design principles such as negative space, focal point, texture, and repetition. My intent was to visually represent these principles in different ways with at least 3 materials. However, I wanted to focus on texture for all three sculptures to see how far I could stretch different materials to create interesting textures. I decided to use masking tape as a material in two sculptures. It ended up creating two really different coming from the same material. I felt the work was missing an element so I added color in different ways to all of them to help complete each sculpture. I want to keep exploring different materials with innovation in mind. This piece allowed me to explore using different design principles to create something and I would like to learn about and explore more ways to visually represent these principles in my work.

This sculpture explores a personal memory of when I was told I was adopted. I was told at ten years old, after a beach trip, and was shown a photo album of my family made for my birth mom.
The hard balsa wood cover of the book represents how it was hard and nerve-wracking for my parents to tell me, as they did not know how I would react to being told. But once the book is opened there is warm-toned paper with soft edges to represent how everything ended up going well and how it is a warm memory for me now. The number of pages is 20 which represents the age I am now and how I still look back on the memory fondly. The stitching on the book represents that my family does not need to be blood-related to be a family as we have love which stitches us together and makes us a family. The color of the thread illustrates the mystery of what they were going to tell me and how I thought I might be getting in trouble at first, but it all ended well. The scale represents that while it was a big event in my life, the memory of it is something I want to keep close.

This relief sculpture entitled Details of Skin explores different details of human skin. It is inspired by how every person's pore pattern, fingerprints, and hair growth is unique to them. The artwork uses depth and texture to encapsulate the different aspects of human skin and its uniqueness. Another project where I was using masking tape, tracing paper, and gel medium led to a skin-like texture and inspired the use of those materials here as well. The details are magnified to really highlight the aspects of skin that are small and that often are not paid much attention to and to emphasize their uniqueness. This artwork shows the importance of every person being different and how even down to the details of human skin, individuals are unique.

The clay sculptures entitled Angel and Fallen Angel were inspired by the symbols of angels in religion. My intent was to visually communicate the idea of a heavenly angel and a fallen angel that gave into temptation. I wanted to focus on the religious and cultural symbols of Christianity because I grew up in a Christian household and was taught that if people disobeyed the bible they would end up like the fallen angel. I decided to include the cultural symbol of the snake representing Lucifer on earth and apples representing the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden to represent temptation. I felt the work was not producing the idea I wanted to communicate so I used gold ink to add to the sculpture's representation of angels as gold is often used as a heavenly color. I want to keep exploring the clay medium, as I had never worked with it like this before. I want to keep learning about cultural and visual symbols and how to further my representation of them in art.
