On Longing

On Longing

The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale.

I choose this photo because it kind of looks as if my best friend, Emma, is trying to show the vast scale of the ocean compared to her open arms. This photo was taken back in 2018, in Vilano Beach actually, before I knew I'd be coming to Flagler. She is still back home and I miss her tons. This image unintendedly demonstrates the scale of the ocean compared to my best friend, and could also unintentionally demonstrate the scale to which our lives have changed, but we are still best friends.

The souvenir speaks to a context of origin
through a language of longing, for it is not
an object arising out of need or use value.

This image is from January 2023, it's from my flagship trip in Sicily, Italy. The image is of a bunch of postcards and prints from this small bookshop my friends and I found in our favorite city in Sicily. We went in there 4 different times in the like two days we were there. I thought the picture related to the quote because none of these postcards and prints were something we need but they all spoke to the place of origin, a place that I long to go back to.

The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental,
and the three dimensional into the minute that
which can be enveloped by the body.

This image is from when I was sending my mom pictures of my souvenirs from Sicily. I was in the hotel after a long day exploring and sending her all my pictures. This souvenir is probably one of my favorites, as it's a handmade piece of pottery that I got in one of the towns I visited. I thought this fit the quote because the image shows something that has the memory of my trip in this small piece of pottery.

To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both
a specimen and a trophy.

This picture is of my wall with pictures from Italy, postcards from that previously mentioned bookshop, and an original work from the bookshop by the shop owner's wife. I feel like this image relates because it's almost like I am displaying these mementos like trophies and I feel they can be exotic because not everyone gets to travel and get souvenirs from different places.

The place of origin must remain unviable
in order for desire to be generated.

This image is also from Sicily. It is from when our favorite chaperone was giving us a tour, he was so nervous but he did an amazing job!  He was from Bulgaria so it is highly unlikely that we will ever see him again or just to relive our trip. I chose this image because the place we took and the experience we had there are unavailable but obviously I wish I could go back because of how amazing the experience was.
